Designers wanted for Pearl Look Nigeria 2015

Designers who are interested in showcasing at the Pearl look competition 2015 should send an email to info@pearllook.com or call 08098809090 requesting for information on how to go about applications.

I NEVER DID FREE SHOWS OR MEDIOCRE JOBS - BOLU 'BLACKBONE' BENSON

Most models know Bolu probably because of his distinct features, his face with those collar bones which can make (please what is the name of that hot american model that came to Nigeria last year oooo chai!!!) have the lowest of esteem and a body that makes the ladies drooling and begging for more(please check his facebook timeline)or because he is the 1st runner up Elite Model Look Nigeria 2014. Whichever way you know him, whether he is your padi or your crush(whatever *rolls eyes*) he is a very confident person and I like his spirit. Ladies and Gentlemen presenting....

Name
Bolu Olaitan Blackbone Benson

Growing up
Growing up was cool, I was raised by a single parent, my mother to be precise although my father is still alive.

About myself
I have a thing for fashion, an almost obsession for a perfect body, that's why I always work out, I hate being unfit.

How modelling started
My first year in the university, I did not know how to go about being a model. One day while I was coming back from a vigil, a man approached me. He told me he likes my physique and we got talking. Later on, I was signed to XA Model International. Two years later, I signed up with Beth Model Management Africa.

Journey into elite model look competition
Initially, I did not intend going for the competition, that is because I believed it is for aspiring models. Anyway, someone pushed me to try it out and the rest became history. I had lots of fun in the house tho.

Modelling before elite
Well I must say it was tough. I am a person who has standards , I never did mediocre jobs or shows. Whenever I go for castings, I get picked and sometimes I get dropped till I noticed you have to belong to either of the two biggest modelling agencies in Nigeria (names withheld).

(Q.) Are you saying before elite, you never did free jobs or walk for small fashion shows.
To make it clear, modelling is my job, its not just a passion, so I should get paid for any services rendered. No matter who you are, if you call me for any free jobs, I turn it down. I wish every model could adopt this approach, models will have more value. I believe it is cheap models and models of no value that jump on evey free job they come across. This is what give other models bad names. Most models do not know that without them, the fashion industry will crumble.

(Q.) Have you ever at any point in your life become frustrated or want to give up
No. I'm a stubborn person, when it comes to giving up. A lot of people have told me to stop modelling, but I never listened, I kept on moving. There was I time I was going through a tough time, but I told myself that  if fashion can bring me to my lowest point, then I won't stop until it takes me to my high point.

(Q.) How do you handle the rejection when you get turned down for a job.
Since I got signed with beth, I have only be turned down once. But before I joined Beth, it was really hard, I feel down and dejected, but it doesn't last. Negative vibes and feelings doesn't last in me. I get it over with and move on with the zeal to work harder next time.

(Q.) What do you feel about nude shoots.
Well as a model, I shouldn't be uncomfortable doing nudes, but I have to be well paid.

(Q.)What is one thing you hope to change in the modelling industry if given a chance
Respect and value placed on models.

(Q.) Where do you see yourself in the next five years
I see myself as a top model in new York, and also an actor, I love acting. I hope to be married by then.

(Q.)If not modelling, what do you see yourself doing
I see myself acting and going into real estate management.

(Q.) Where do you see the Nigerian modelling industry in the next 10 years
I see it as the best in Africa. I believe we have the resources and platform. What we need is a change in mentality

(Q.) How do you keep fit.
I jog twice a week which is very important. I exercise five times a week. I do not push weight any longer because of my chest size. I squatt, do aerobics, do sit up and take lots of water.

(Q.) What's your advice for upcoming models
They should never relent. They should keep working harder. Never give up even if it seems difficult. Models should never compromise, because that is what models do.

Thank you very much for your time, for agreeing to this interview. For enduring my pings and pestering. Thank you.
U wc

AFRICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL CYCLE 1 EPISODE 7

After receiving some tough love from Oluchi during last week's elimination, Michaela gets a bit of tenderness from the supermodel in a one-on-one session. Ready to take on the next challenge, she joins the girls at Cape Town’s historic Castle of Good Hope for their next challenge shoot. To their surprise, not only will they be shooting in oversized men’s suits from South African fashion and lifestyle giant Craig Port, they will be shot by resident judge Josie Borain. The goal of the shoot is to create and advertisement for Africa's Verve credit card.
After a giggly introduction to their male model co-star Dave Kabamba, the girls get started shooting in the castle. Aamito and Opeyemi receive the most praise, seemingly able to dominate their costar as the brief for Verve demanded. Michelle and Roselyn land in the bottom two. Despite having delivered what the judges consider to be her best photograph yet, Michelle is eliminated for having coasted throughout the competition.

AFRICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL CYCLE 1 EPISODE 6

In this episode, the girls are faced with their most challenging photo shoot yet: a township couture-themed ad for cellular phone network Etisalat. They also model the latest collection from iconic South African fashion designer Marianne Fassler, while photographer Freddie Child-Villiers had them wrangle a pair of goats for the shoot.

Before Michelle, who is the first girl to shoot, begins her session, a brief fight ensues between the villagers and the show's team. After the situation is resolved, the shoot continues on as usual. Most of the models struggle to remain balanced with their heels on the rugged terrain. Despite having the advantage of wearing flats instead of heels, Joyce fails to create more dynamic poses.

At panel, Roselyn and Aamito are given the most positive feedback, while Joyce is given the worst. Cheandre, Michelle, and Opeyemi all receive mixed feedback. Oluchi questions Michaela's desire to continue in the competition, who reveals that she has expressed her desire to leave on numerous occasions.

In the end Joyce from Nigeria was eliminated while Rosslyn from Ghana won the challenge.

AFRICA'S NEXT TOP MODEL CYCLE 1 EPISODE 5

West African girls vent their frustrations as they feel Rhulani is being given a pass due to her inexperience, while Rhulani herself attacks Michelle for being fake. Soon, the girls are taken to the top of Cape Town’s own Table Mountain, where they are told by Oluchi to absorb the beauty atop the mountain for their next shoot; a promotional campaign for South Africa Tourism. For the shoot, the models wear headdresses made by master florist Alwijn Burger of blomboy from fynbos, the indigenous flora found around Cape Town, as the girls pose in front of photographer Jonathan Taylor’s lens. Contending with not just the mammoth head pieces, but brightly colored paints and powders, some girls do better than others. In the end, Opeyemi, shaken after last week’s near-elimination, emerges as the unanimous favorite at judging. Meanwhile, South Africans Cheandre and Rhulani are at risk of elimination. In the end, Rhulani’s overall performances fail to keep her in the competition

Jourdan Dunn
Hello FabFairies, hope your day is going well? well mine is. I came across this post on BellaNaija, and i thought I should share it with you fabfairies.

British fashion model Jourdan Dunn has made history as the first black model to land a solo cover for Vogue UK magazine, in the last 13 years. WOW! isn't that so amazing?? A black model like us achieving such a feat, i think we should give her a standing O. Do you know what that means, being on British Vogue? The last time a black model graced the cover of Vogue was in 2002 and that was Naomi Campbell. Well *eye roll* Naomi Campbell is a supermodel, so she deserved it.

The 24-year-old model was so excited and shared the news on her Instagram page along with a cover of the magazine that she is featured on.
She captioned ‘I’m so Happy to finally say I’M ON THE COVER OF BRITISH VOGUE!!!’ Thank you Patrick Demarchelier and Kate Phelan for making this happen and also thank you all for the Love and Support it means everything to me #2015YearOfTheDunn.’
The cover, which is for the February 2015 issue, shows a simple shot of Jourdan looking stunning sitting in the sunshine in a Prada SS15 short summer dress. For the shoot she was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier and styled by Kate Phelan.
.
I like her face and she looks amazing in this magazine cover. So FabFairies reading this, no matter how many times you have been turned down or rejected for jobs, just know that there is something bigger waiting for you. All the top black models you see now making it in the UK and US, were also turned down, discriminated against because of their skin colour, but you know what, they came out stronger. So do not relent, do not get discouraged from this distractions and challenges, keep going for these castings, you will get there one day.

AGENCY'S CASTING CALLS

Hello FabFairies, how was church today? and for the moslems, how are you?.

This is a new year, i know most agencies will soon start their open casting calls for new models, i also believe some of you are getting prepared. But first, do you know what a casting call is and do you have an idea of  things you need when going for a open casting call..

Casting calls is a day were an  agency opens its doors to aspiring models who are willing to join its agency without having to make an appointment. This gives you the perfect opportunity to meet with top agencies.

When you go for a casting call, you have to present yourself in a way to catch the agencies attention, this starts from the way you dress, like the popular saying that says dress the way you want to be addressed. The most important thing to do when it comes to clothes is to be yourself or sport your own personal style, but please be age appropriate. Do not dress overly sexy but don't undress, either. For female models, the best thing you can do is to wear leggings or fitted jeans, heels (always wear heels!) and a tank top or fitted top. Wear clothes that flatter your figure and that you feel good wearing. For male models, nice and comfortably jeans, clean shoes (type doesn't really matter as long as they are presentable) and a fitted t-shirt is alrite.

For hair and makeup, your hair should be left undone, if it is not possible, you should tie it away from your face. Dont wear big or colourful weaves or hair that will draw attention away from your face. The Agencies are not interested in the  hair you are wearing, just be yourself and dont overdo it. For makeup, make sure your face is not too oily, no need of heavy foundation either and make sure your eyebrows are well defined, your nails should not fixed but cut low and clean. Also dont use loud lipsticks like red, wine, purple, instead use lipgloss, nude lipsticks or nothing at all. The point is, the agency wants to see the real you, so dont go there looking like Lady Gaga.

The agencies will instruct you to bring professional pictures. My advice for you is if you have a modelling portfolio, please take it along, if you dont have one, go to a studio and take very good pictures, not everyone can afford a portfolio. Take about 5 to 10 pictures of you wearing different costumes. These don't have to be professional but they should be good quality and show your face straight on.

Write your name, stats and contact information on the back of each pictures in case the agency asks to keep them . No funny poses or pictures with other people. At the casting call, the agent may take pictures of you.
Each agency has their own way of conducting their casting calls, but expect to be looked over head to toe by the agency's staff. They'll most likely  ask you questions about yourself, if you have any modeling experience, why you want to be a model, what makes you stand out, etc. Be honest, be confident and be yourself.

I remeber a casting call i went for December 2013. I was asked to walk (as in a runway walk, if you don't know mhow, just do your best, they don't expect you to be a pro) At the end, they got my statistics and contact info. If they're really interested they'll let you know...if not right then and there, in a few days.

Some may tell you straight up that you aren't what they're looking for. There are times when they'll tell you to come back at a later date. Don't take it personally. The good thing is that they want you to come back so don't question their reasons. Listen to their feedback and work on improving.

Just keep in mind that the most important thing is when going for  a casting call, believe in yourself and be confident.

THANKS

Beauty Pageantry VS Fashion Modeling

Hello fabfairies. I just met this amazing guy, a model trainer and scout on Facebook. His name is Smart Courage. I asked what his take on modelling in Nigeria is, he said "Fashion and modelling in the country is growing fast and as every growing industry there ought tobe hitches." Hmmm do you agree? I also got this article from his Facebook page Worldcharming Smart Courage. ENJOY and LEARN

Beauty Pageantry VS Fashion Modeling

There’s been a longstanding debate on the difference between fashion modeling & beauty pageantry. Many argue it’s the same, but they couldn’t be any more wrong. Here’s my take on it.
Many pageant girls desire to be successful fashion models but very few would be. Fashion modeling requires a certain edge & skill that not many pageant girls possess. Though, some pageant girls do possess the ability to be great commercial models, posing for department store catalogs, advertising swimwear, appearing in commercials for beauty products & such like but rarely have what is required to do editorial/fashion runway modeling. And there’s nothing wrong with that because they have their own niche.
I’m sure you all may even notice a difference in the way pageant girls walk & they way fashion runway models walk. Pageant girls tend to have more sway & pizazz, for lack of better words, than fashion runway models do. Equipped with spins & twirls to dazzle the audience & judges. Partly because as a pageant girl the focus is on YOU, but as a fashion runway model the focus is on the clothing. Some fashion models do have a signature walk, but in recent times that practice has dwindled due to the end of the so-called ‘Supermodel Era’ (80s-90s) when pageant girls & supermodels had a very fine line between each other.
This was a time where supermodels usually had a signature walk, usually smiled on the runways while displaying skillful spins & twirls to show off the clothing. Most importantly, they were not the stick figures we see today. They had curves & ‘meat on their bones’ as some would say. The demand on model size stipulations during the end of that era was what put an end to that. And as the demands from designers to hone their artistic integrity rose, all the spinning & twirling was also stopped. Designers have different styles & techniques & wanted to showcase that more on the runways by giving clear commands on how the model should walk (enter & exit), pose & even their overall mood on the runway. Clearly, the models are not in control, like pageant girls are, of themselves. Things have also changed as cultures & societies evolved over the decades.
Even the training in pageantry is different to that of fashion modeling. Contestants are taught to flirt & charm the audience in their favor. Some may say, much like the models of Victoria’s Secret (VS). VS seems to have crossed the aesthetics of the pageant girl & the fashion supermodel, but that is due to the sexual/flirtatious element to the product at hand. Their lingerie collection. A proven marketing success due to their over five BILLION dollars in sales each year. The VS Fashion Show is the one show where known fashion supermodels & the theatrics of pageantry are combined with the help of musical performances to create an extravaganza anticipated by millions each year. However, unless requested, a fashion model generally does not interact with the audience.
Now, femininity may be an asset in pageantry, but androgyny is welcomed in the fashion industry. Femininity can be a disadvantage in fashion editorial/fashion runway modeling. Pageants are mainly about the feminine beauty & glamour of the contestants. Though fashion editorial/fashion runway may have glamorous elements, the key focus is the details of the clothing; the theme, the fabrics, the cuts, the lines, the fit, the color palettes/patterns etc. In beauty pageants, contestants wear clothes that accent & make them look better. However, it is a fashion model’s job to make THE CLOTHES or WEARABLE ART(in cases of haute couture) look good & to convey whatever persona/look as requested by the designer/artist.
Another difference is physical criteria. In pageants, they usually look for the most perfect looking woman. The one whose feminine beauty is so commanding & poised that it stands apart from the rest of the pack. Fashion models do not have to be conventionally beautiful. In fact, sometimes it’s much better for their career if they are not. Clients are usually looking for the next fresh face. A unique face. A face that commands attention. Sometimes a bit weird looking, but one that photographs well. Taking into consideration the bone structure, angles of the face, the symmetry, the width of the eyes, the shape of the lips etc. Being a fashion model also has height restrictions, where pageantry does not.
Pageantry & fashion modeling may have their similarities but their differences have grown to outweigh those similarities since the turn of the 21st century. So don’t be left in dark. Pageantry & fashion modeling are two vastly different things.
Hello fabfairies, you are welcome to another year, the year 2015. I know  almost everyone is at home enjoying theirselves, still eating christmas chicken and all that, but you all need to know that life is not about jolificating, going to parties, hanging out with friends and having fun that doesn't add to your life. I know God has a purpose for you on this earth, so  i think now is the time to think inwardly and find out that purpose. Know that you are not the owner of your life, we will all go back to our creator one day and give account to him about our sojourn on this earth, so please make your living on earth worthwhile. The greatest disaster is to leave this earth without making any impact in somebody's life, so please it is time for some orientation if you have not done that.
This is also a reminder that elections are coming up next month or thereabout, so i heard, so please if you like waka waka, please reduce it till after elections. If you decide to sit your ass on your couch at home for a few weeks, it wont hurt my dear, so be careful.
I know so many fabfairies(models) out there are really hoping this year is going to be their year to get that big break they have always wanted, to get good jobs and strutt the runways of the biggest fashion shows in Africa. I know being an aspiring model in Nigeria is frustrating especially when you are not signed to one of the biggest modelling agencies in Nigeria, i know some people like me are about to give up. Its okay not to be okay, its okay to want to give up but then i tell you if you are really born to be a model and a successful one for that matter, you don't have to push it so hard, i assure you, it will come to you at the right time. But please no matter what you do, dont try desperate means to get to the top, because in the future when you look back at what you have done in the past, will you be proud? can you boldly tell your children that "when i was younger, i was a model and i enjoyed it without regrets"? can you look back at your modelling days and smile with fulfillment and satisfaction? Hmmmm(takes a deep breath) please think about this well.
So once again, i wish you a happy new year and all the blessings that comes with it. stay safe.
