The Model's Workshop Highlights - Session 5

Good evening models. Straight to the business of the day. The Model's Workshop. The facilitators I am going to talk about today are Kelechi-Amadi-obi, Uju Chimezie and Alex Nwobedi. The topic was: Innovating the Modelling Industry through Skills Development.

Uju Chimezie

Uju Chimezie is a top Nigerian model. She was a nominee for best promising female model of the year 2010 and a contestant of Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2012. She was the first speaker for this session.

She defined Innovation has recreating something for it to become beautiful. If you as asked as a model to model for a bag of garri, you have a duty to make that bag of garri stand out. A model needs to stand out all the time, know your worth and learn how to organise yourself. When you are going for a casting, go with your black heels, do not use makeup, use lip gloss but not lipstick, do not do brows on fleek, try and be as plain as possible.

Requirements for Castings
(1.) Do not apply powder
(2.) For female models, if you are on your period, carry with you extra sanitary towels.
(3.) Try as much as possible not to have a body odour so you don't wreck the designer's outfit. Carry along a deodorant.
(4.) Learn to shave
(5.) Know the brief for the casting before you go for it
(6.) Don't be desperate, know your limits and category
(7.) Train yourself. Everyone has their features which makes them stand out.
(8.) Not every job is for every model, learn to accept rejection.
(9.) You need to know the brief of a job you are going for.
(10.) Signing under an agency is important. The period you are not signed under one, use that period to train yourself.
(11.) Know why you are modelling, think of renumeration too.
(12.) Work with professional photographers.
(13.) Know how to take care of yourself and be well organised
(14.) Never fall to inferiority complex. Don't think because you are not tall, you are not good enough as a model. Kate Moss is like 5'7, but she is one of the world's top model. She might not be as tall as many of her colleagues in the modelling industry, but her pose game is on fleek. (What I learnt from her that where she was deficient in, she made up in other things. So next time someone tells you you are not tall enough that you can't make it as a model, tell them, 'tell Kate Moss that.') Know what you can do as a model, do not sell yourself cheap.

Kelechi Amadi-Obi

He is a top Nigerian photographer and the publisher of style mania magazine. He has worked with top brands in Nigeria and his works are known internationally too.

He continued from where Miss Uju stopped. He talked about things he looks out for when casting models. A model is someone set apart from the crowd. If someone says you look like a model, that means there is something about you, the way you come across sets you apart. As a model, you are you, no one can take your DNA away from you.

For advertising and Fashion modelling, a tired model cannot be booked. Take good care of yourself. Make sure you sleep well a day before a shoot.

Like all other professions, for modelling as a profession, you need to acquire the necessary etiquette. If a casting is by 8:00 am, come 15 minutes earlier. Coming late to a casting or shoot is unprofessional.

As a model, most of the time, you are required to be in front of a camera. The worst thing to do as a model is to ask the photographer how you should pose.

Posing is a movement, like dancing which is continuous. Posing is an art, you have to learn it, it is a performance, like a skill. You as a model tell a story through your dance. You interpreted the brief by the movement of your body. All the time, you have to be composed, clients look at demeanour. Modeling is the outer expression of your inner self. Get a mirror and practise your pose in front of the mirror.

Get a portfolio that is professionally done. You can get a portfolio done by either shooting with a photographer or sometimes when you do a magazine shoot. A portfolio must be done in stages, don't be in a rush. It must be targeted to an audience as well. Target your portfolio to a market. Most times, clients do not need to see you physically, your portfolio should speak for you.

ALEX NWOBEDI

She is a model, a legal practitioner and face of sleek 2011. Her discussion is very useful and important to the Nigerian Modelling industry.

The Nigerian Modelling Industry hasn't been able to reach international modelling standards.

She also talked about the impact of an agency on the career of a model. An agency can be the best thing or the worst thing that can ever happen to a model. The modelling industry is not that big for a lot of models in Nigeria. Also there is no organised body regulating models in Nigeria. 10 years ago, some models were being paid a certain amount of money for shoots and fashion shows. Forward to 10 years after, models are still being paid that same amount.

A model needs to be exposed, be self motivated. Motivation comes as a result of curiosity. What will last for every human is the brain and the works of your hands. Most models are so desperate and want to make it at all cost. Most models are to desperate to ask questions and do things the right way. Most times, your personality matters. You have to find out what you have to do as a model.

If we have a unified body as models, we will move forward. The modelling industry in Nigeria is static. Models in Nigeria are supposed to get the same recognition has actors, musicians and celebs I.e. models not being used as brand ambassadors.

Most models are so ignorant as educated as they are they only care about the fame. We models in Nigeria need to come together as a unified body. Most times people see models as prostitutes because of these people who are so desperate to be famous has given us a bad name. Some even use modelling as a cover up for prostitution. If we have a unified body, we will be able to separate the real working models from those who are not actually models.

Models should get royalty for pictures and works done. Royalty means an individual should not use your picture without your permission. You should be paid for every picture used outside that purpose you shoot the pictures in the first place.

When signed under an agency, make sure you have a contract and review the terms of the contract and make sure its something you can live up to. If you do a shoot, there has to be a contract to make sure the pictures are used only for the purpose for which the pictures were shot.
Models are supposed to be treated as working class and part of the labour market. They are supposed to have health care pensions and pay taxes.

Then I asked a question about people who ask models to pay for jobs. This year alone, i saw adverts about two fashion shows who asked models who may be interested in working for them to contact them, but they have to pay registration fees. The first is 500 naira and the other 2k. I had to call them and ask them to give me reasons why i should pay to work for them, the reasons were not legit. The facilitators could not believe when I told them. Kelechi Amadi Obi said the easiest way to catch a model is to tell her you are a modelling agent. There are modelling agents and pimps, try and investigate and verify their claims.

Do not pay anybody to work for a fashion show, for castings or pay modelling agencies. What you should pay for is modelling competition forms or beauty pageants forms, catwalk training, portfolio developments, shoots in some cases which is part of portfolio development.
There are some modelling competition or beauty pageants you shouldn't even pay for. Pay for the legit and certified ones. Google them biko, if you do not see anything about them, not even a website or anything about them on blogs, please i beg you, take your money elsewhere. Also check out their facebook or instagram to see their past editions and contestants. Not the ones which looks like the organisers are looking for a way to make quick money. Be Careful.

I'm sorry it took me so long to post another session. So keep checking for more sessions, thank you.

The Model's Workshop Highlights - Session 4

Good Morning Models, this is the fourth session of the Model's Workshop. The two facilitators for today are Lola Maja and Ugo Igbokwe who talked about how to take care of your hair and skin.

LOLA MAJA & UGO IGBOKWE
Lola Maja-Okojevoh is a very popular make up artiste. She is the c.e.o of Sacred Creative Artistry and Ugo Igbokwe is an hair stylist and  the c.e.o of Make me beauty place. Mr Ugo describes a model has a mannequin and a black canvass.

You as a model has to work with the make up artiste, photographer and hair stylist to bring your designs to life. As a model, you need to learn how to take care of your hair. Most time as a hair stylist, he has trouble with a model's hair. Styling doesn't mean putting your hair to curls or putting it to a certain style.

When you come for a shoot, come with your hair well prepared, shampooed and moisturised. Take care of your hair all the time. Most successful models are plain in appearance. When you come for a casting plain, with no make up or hair attachment, people will take you serious. The fact that you don't get a job at a casting doesn't mean you are not good enough.

How to take care of your hair and skin

Has a model, nothing must be on your hair most of the time, that's a restriction and holding yourself back. When you want to do a shoot for a hair company and the hair stylist attempts to cut your hair or colour your hair but you tell him no he shouldn't, that is a no no. The hair stylist should care about what to do or not what to do with your hair. As a model, shampoo and condition your hair every week. Every successful model do not keep permanent piece on their hair.

Being a beauty queen does not make you a model. If you have to be pretty to be a model, Alek Week does not have any business in modelling. It doesn't matter how you look, in terms of pretty, your skin matters a lot. Do less of drinking and partying before a shoot because if you have an hangover, it will show.

There is no hard and fast rules to taking care of your hair. As a model, you have to look after your hair, invest in your look, skin and hair. Having a nice personality is irrelevant, if a model with bad skin is booked, so much Money and time will be used to get it to perfection and the photographer has to do a lot of air brushing. You have to spend money and invest in yourself first before anyone can invest in you. Bad habits such as smoking, drinking and partying has to be stopped. For every model, you must have a place of practise, your place of practise is yourself

Rules
1. As a model, do not use products that contain alcohol.
2. Products that makes your hair stiff, avoid them.
3. Avoid the use of Shea butter, it is highly concentrated and makes your hair stiff. It sits on the surface of your hair and nothing goes into it.
4. Oil from vegetables and fruits are good for your hair not vegetable oil for cooking ooo. Use the type of oil that stays with water and not that which seperates itself from water.
5. Drink lots and lots of water.
6. Never go to sleep drunk.
7. Wash your face every night before you go to bed. If you do not wash of your makeup before going to bed the skin eats it and that affects your skin. Before washing your face, put warm water on your face first so your pores will open, wash your face, then rinse with cold water for it to close back.
8. For male models, learn to shave properly. Discover your hair direction. Try rubbing your palm on your face upwards and downwards. The direction you feel roughness shave against it. If you feel roughness while rubbing your palm upwards, shave downwards and vice versa. If you shave in the wrong direction, the hair breaks on the surface of the skin and that causes bumps.
7. Seek advice from professionals.
8. Use the right products for your skin.
9. Female models, for your bikini line, do not shave, wax
10. Try an avoid having hairs on your legs.
11. Always be ready for your shoot. Do not think you have to leave your hair dirty and smelly before you treat it.
12. Do not use white powder, use translucent powder
13. Avoid taking carbonated drink and sweet things, instead take fruits and lots of water.

I actually learnt a lot from this session. Before I used to feel all you need as a model is to be tall skinny and know how to walk and pose, I never knew it had to do with your skin too. Ever since Thursday, I have been careful with my intakes. I'm the type that take two bottles of coke everyday because I felt my mom after she gave birth to my siblings and I is still skinny, so I cannot get fat. I did not know I was destroying my skin too. Ever since Thursday, I stopped taking coke or any sugary food. I drank water instead. And for rice which is carbohydrate which I like eating too much which is not good for the body, I started eating it with egg and meat, then I take bananas then lots of water. In that way, the protein, water and fruit helps too surpress the carbohydrates I took in. So please model, eat less of carbohydrates and more of proteins, vitamins, fruits and lots of water. Its not about not growing fat but having a good skin. This are one of the things they look out for at castings if you do not know. I hope you learnt from this piece because I sure did. So keep checking here for more updates, thank you.

The Model's Workshop Highlights - Session 3

Good morning models. This is the third session of the model's workshop that you all have been waiting for. I can see you all enjoyed the first two session. There is more to come so keep checking and reading. The next facilitators I will be talking about are:

Richard Bamidele Eko

Mr Richard is not a model, but as modelled twice like he always says. He is a photography consultant and C.E.O Sigma, a marketing firm. He was a one time marketing manager of Kelechi Amadi Studios. He worked with Kelechi Amadi Obi for six years has a project manager. He also was the marketing manager for Mania Magazine, a fashion and lifestyle magazine owned by Kelechi Amadi Obi.

He talked about: Business Etiquette and Investment Opportunities for models.

He described a model as an individual who can metamorphose to something else. Then he conducted a test, where he asked three questions:
(1.) How much money do you want to make between now and the end of the year.
(2.) How much do you want to save from your income
(3.) How much do you want to earn or have in your deposit when you are done with modelling professionally.
There are three ingredients required to achieve this feat: (1.) Attitude (2.) Personality (3.) Skills (4.) Patience (5.) Communication skills.

If your genuine interest is modelling, you need to research and know what you are going up against. Change is coming to Nigeria, you need to be ready for what is coming.

Take modelling as a serious business. Be serious about it, believe it, analyse it, and express it. Have the passion and interest.
Be disciplined and professional, don't be fake. Get educated, education has a way of fusing in and helping you. You need to know and learn how to relate with people, your personality grows, most modelling jobs you get are from referrals. Have a nice attitude, know when to talk and when not to. Be yourself. Define your relationship when on set, be on time, clients will take note, there is no excuse for being late. Being on time is professional, clients takes note of these little things. Learn to say I'm sorry when you are wrong.

He also talked about agencies. Models please you need to belong to a good agency who will represent your interest well if you want to get jobs. Be conversant with your agency. As a model signed to an agency, you need to be loyal, anything that has to do with your modelling career, discuss with your agency.

For instance, where an agency books a let's say mtn job for its model, then after the job, the same model goes for an airtel casting, gets picked and is used for the job and the agency is oblivious about it. The breach is detected and the two brands take themselves to court over a model, the agency is caught in between. That gives the agency a bad name and the only way out of such is the agency changes its name.  This shows total disregard for the agency and negligence on the part of the model. I know of an agency doesn't allow any of its models who has a signed contract under it to do any other job except those provided for by the agency.
As a model, you can destroy an agency. As a model, you have to be very professional. I saw one BC recently about a banking advert casting were the client said if you have done any banking job this year, do not bother coming for the casting, this is to prevent instances I just mentioned above. As a model, do not try to model for two similar brands, it gives your agency a bad name and might backfire on you as a model. Get things right.

Then he talked about clients. There are situations whereby a client enters into a contract with a model that the model shall work for the brand for a number of years and such model is not allowed to work for any other client. It happens.

When your agency sends you for a job or casting, you need to ask for the brief. A brief is a description of the job or casting, for a casting, the type of model needed whether dark skinned or light skinned, tall or short, what size and for a shoot, the theme behind the shoot storyline, location. When you have knowledge of the brief, you go prepared. Asking for the brief shows competency and professionalism. Modelling is straight forward but easy for those that have it at heart.

As a model signed under an agency, you have to be pro active. A model who is sharp, smart and has done her research. A model that researchs goes out of her way to find things out. A model should be creative and flexible.

A model's greatest weapon is her portfolio. The best way to get work is to create work. Create a portfolio, do not wait for an agency to do that for you. Find an upcoming photographer, make up artiste, designer, stylist, hair stylist, location manager. This incurs little or no cost because you guys are all upcoming, rendering services to each other, are looking for a way to get into the industry and are in a way helping one another. Then after that, ask known photographers for a test shoot, although this is not an easy task because most of these photographers are most times busy. But if you can send them good pictures and prove to them that you are worth the time, they will make time for you. Then add your best pictures into your portfolios. When you create a team, it influences you positively. Creativity comes to play when you merge together.

Final words: when you entered school, there were no jobs, when you leave, there will still be no jobs, it is the creativity you make when you are in school that will help you when you leave. When you fail now, you will not know how to fail again. Make mistakes now that you are in school.

He also advised models not to drop themselves or to stoop so low because we want to get a job. He said something that 'a man forgets the girls he slept with, but never forgets the girls he did not get the chance too.' The guy you refused to sleep with today because of that job that the pay is just 30,000 naira might recommend you tomorrow for a job that cost 1 million naira because you set your standard, you gave yourself worth and you did not sell yourself cheap. So models, no matter what do not let desperation take over.

Sign under a good agency, emphasis on good so you don't find yourself in situations like this. If you are yet to join an agency, get a team and create a portfolio.

The Model's Workshop 2015 Highlights - Session 2

Good morning models, hope your day is going well. I can see you enjoyed yesterday's piece of the model's workshop. Keep reading, learn and please share. The facilitators i'm going to talk about are:

Tamar Awobotu and Fome Ejumudo
Tamar is a Nigerian model based in South Africa. She is a Tourism Ambassador. Miss Tourism 2004. Winner Top Model Worldwide.
Tamar Awobotu

She alongside Fome Ejumudo talked about 'international modelling business.' Fome Ejumudo is also a model based in South Africa. She is also a mother of one and TV presenter.
Fome Ejumudo

Miss Tamar was the first to talk. She talked about the industry being generational and how she has been modelling for 14 years now.
She talked about the appearance of a model. She said it is not about being tall, skinny, beautiful, we should not be deceived by the looks. The calling needs to keep coming. She said models should be neat all the time and natural as possible. Models shouldn't wear coloured hair or fix coloured nails. As a model, do not wear heavy makeup, models should be very clean and plain all the time. As for male models, you shouldn't wear  hairstyles like dreads or keep bushy breads.

She also talked about poise, there is a way models should sit, walk, stand, models should also have charisma because most people see models as call girls.

She also said as a model, you should not answer every photographer that approaches you. There should be a contract with the photographer that he should keep the pictures as confidential so in case of conflict, he doesn't end up putting the pictures everywhere.

As a model, don't try so hard to show you are a model, people will see it in you. As a model, you need to learn the hard way, sometimes you get a no, its not everytime you get a yes. You should take good care of yourself, be confident, know who you are. Try and start from somewhere.

Mrs Fome continued from there. She said for international modelling business, there are no hard and fast rules. What works for one may not work for the other.

She talked about modelling in South Africa especially Capetown. Capetown is a more international business place for models in Africa because models from allover the world come there to work. Models in a bid to make it in their career go to capetown to do shoots and add to their portfolios. You need to do your homework and research.
She told us a little about herself, she said when she first moved to South Africa to kick start her modelling career over there, she waited for a long time to be scouted. Then one day, she went out and stopped waiting to be scouted. If you have a passion, you have to go out, explore and be known.

She went ahead to talk about challenges:
The number one as we all know is rejection. The fact that you are being turned down for a job doesn't mean you are not good enough, it means you do not fit the brief. Models take note. Every job or casting as a brief or description. With time, you will get used to the rejection.

The second is fending for yourself while modelling abroad. Before you say you want to model abroad, you have to think about it, do your homework and research about the place you are willing to go model. It takes three months to get paid for a job abroad, within the three months, how do you want to cope and fend for yourself? Also where do you want to stay, do you know how much rent cost? how are you going to pay your rent abroad? How do you get money for transportation to go for castings? This is were a good agency under which you are signed comes in. A good agency will give you money to go for your casting but will when your pay eventually comes remove the money from your pay. All these, you need to consider.

The major international modelling markets in the United States are new York which is the main, Miami, Florida, L.A.e.t.c. In Europe, they are London, Italy, Milan, Paris. It is a competitive market, so you need to be full of self-confidence. Don't listen to people's stories or experiences, try it out yourself.

She advised that if you intend to model abroad, you should try South Africa first. When you get to South Africa, try Johanaesburg. There, modelling is fair and sometimes there are slow seasons, then later on, you should move to cape town. Capetown is a good place for modelling, there are jobs available. Either way, do your researches.

She also advised we models to make ourselves a brand. Modelling in a way is related to acting, entertainment, music, start something related. Gain experience and make yourself a brand. You also need to equip yourself with education. It is better you work locally before you work internationally.

For modelling abroad, you need to sign under an agency, this is because modelling abroad is well structured unlike here in Nigeria where you can choose not to sign under an agency or you can sign under more than one agency. She also talked about agencies bargaining on your behalf. An agency is to make sure you don't use more than the hours you are supposed to shoot or work for a job and so on like that.

That brings us to the end of this session. Join Models diarys bbm channel C001A0EE9.

If you enjoyed the model's workshop piece I have been posting so far please, please, please I beg you please nominate The Model's workshop Season2 as west african fashion event of the year category  webxpresstech.com/WAFA/nomination.php Thank you as you do so.

THE MODEL'S WORKSHOP 2015 HIGHLIGHTS.

Good morning models, how are you all doing.
Like in my previous post, I talked about the model's workshop which went well and how the discussions therein could add value to the career of a model, both aspiring and professional. I was however reluctant to give highlights of the event because I felt it would be unfair to those that registered for the event but the thing is these models had the opportunity to see the facilitators one on one, asked questions, interact with them and even got certificate of participation. So they still have an edge over y'all that did not attend.
The facilitators were amazing and fantastic and they really impacted so much on the models.

Uju Nwobodoh Marshal

Uju is a Nigeria top model. This tall and dark beauty was Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2013 model of the year. She has strut the runway of so many big fashion shows and has worked alongside top Nigeria designers.

Uju spoke on the topic Talent: Identification, Development and Management. She admonished us to identify our passion, that can our passion stand challenges. She went further to distinguish between ushering and modelling, they are not the same, they are two parallel lines. She told us to make up our minds if that is what we want to do and work hard to achieve this. After that, make time to train and build yourself to become a model
She went ahead to talk about herself. She said she is a very shy person and not wanting to be a model. She started her research and collated about 50 magazines. She said modelling is not something you have to wait for someone to come and help you, you have to build and help yourself before someone can help you. Do not sit and believe everything one says, probably someone tells you that you are tall, pretty and skinny and you are good to go as a model, you have to build yourself to be discovered. As an aspiring model, don't start with being all about the money, build yourself first. When a photographer comes to meet you for a shoot, as an aspiring model, do not ask for pay. You have to build yourself to get to that point where you start asking for pay.
Then she advised us as models to eat right and exercise. It is not about you eating anyhow and not becoming fat, it is about strength and flexibility. As a model, you should know what to eat and when to eat. Do a lot of Yoga, it helps with flexibility.

As a model, you have to know how to deliver, if you are signed under an agency and you don't get jobs, the agency after the expiration of your contract will drop you and won't bother renewing your contract. To be signed under an agency is one thing, to get jobs is another, being sent to castings by your agency doesn't guarantee you getting the job. As a model, you have to be smart. Prepare ahead of your casting.
When you are going for a photoshoot, you ask for the theme and story behind the shoot. Your sense should work with the photographer, be able to communicate with the photographer. Models should learn to research because fashion changes. Models should build their look, believe in your self and be confident, no one is nice in this industry.
She told has that we have to be strong that when she first started as a model, few people believed in her, she got horrible comments from people, but she never gave up.
There are certain ways one should dress to a casting, because model scouts could be present at the casting, you never know who is watching or coming. Take intakes that will help your skin and look.
She dispelled the common notion that when you get to a certain age as a model, you have to stop modelling. She said as long as you look young, you can go on modelling as long as you want.
She emphasized on the fact that modelling is a profession and not a hobby, you have to take it serious. You should not let your modelling career conflict with your school work or education, it is either you are not in school or done with school. Try not to let people deceive you, do not fall into flattery. Try to reconsider this passion of yours.

Mr Ovo Ogufure

The next facilitator is the C.E.O of XA modelling agency, Mr Ovo Ogufure. He talked about 'Requirement of a Successful Model Personality.

He says as a model, you look out for other successful who has towed the path.
You have to be sociable, take steps to interact with people and meet people within the industry. Be memorable. Identify your unique selling point. He emphasized on doing researches. Be confident, have a good level of confidence and build your self esteem. Always have presence, try to be noticed and have charisma. He talked about new trends where brands use celebs and not models to represent their brands. this is not supposed to be so.

Develop your sense of style. Develop your model image. Watch your body structure. As a model, be mysterious, do not be found here and there. If you want to take nude shots, let it be don't artistically. On the runway, leave when the ovation is loudest, do not strike a pose more than three seconds.
During the question session, someone asked about height, Mr Ovo said every shouldn't necessarily be a fashion model, there are other types of modelling one can try out, irrespective of requirements however, there should be your selling point that distinguishes you and makes you prominent.

This is the first part of the session, i will post more ASAP. cheers

The Model's Workshop

The models workshop Nigeria was da bomb. A big shout out to the organisers and facilitators. If you were not there, you missed a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Talks and discussions from seasoned professionals in the fashion, beauty, modelling and photography industry was the other of the day. Facilitators that you ordinarily won't see in real life except by chance were there to talk to the models.

I wasn't there as a participant, but as press and oh God, I learnt so much. What I learnt, I'm going to be sharing just a bit on my blog very soon. So watch out.
